Modernism and The Bauhaus

Today we had a lecture on Modernism and the Bauhaus. Modernism does NOT mean ‘modern’, the key elements of this style/ movement is that it is a deliberate departure of tradition. Artists in this movement believe in using present day materials. It is also known as ‘the machine age’ because of the industrialization. The overall single most important goal of Modernism is the creation of a better society. This movement all started when an art and design school was created in Germany, known as ‘The Bauhaus’. Some of the famous artists from this movement were Johannes Itten (1888 – 1967), Moholy Nagy (1895 – 1946), Joost Schmidt (1893 – 1948) and Herbert Bayer (1895 – 1946).
